Benefits of DLI Model
Studies show that two-way language learning gives children a variety of economic, cultural, cognitive, and psychosocial advantages. Dual language programs are vastly different from the methods by which a student would normally acquire a new language and has proven successful because “it avoids skill-building in favor of natural approaches to language acquisition,” according to the authors of “Diary of a Bilingual School.” Students of the DLI Model: achieve higher proficiency in the second language than traditional foreign language instruction; perform as well as or better than English-only students on standardized tests in English; and are more aware of and generally show more positive attitudes towards other cultures.
