Benefits of DLI Model

Studies show that two-way language learning gives children a variety of economic, cultural, cognitive, and psychosocial advantages. Dual language programs are vastly different from the methods by which a student would normally acquire a new language and has proven successful because “it avoids skill-building in favor of natural approaches to language acquisition,” according to the authors of “Diary of a Bilingual School.” Students of the DLI Model: achieve higher proficiency in the second language than traditional foreign language instruction; perform as well as or better than English-only students on standardized tests in English; and are more aware of and generally show more positive attitudes towards other cultures.

So Collier and Thomas are researchers for Dual Language Immersion, and what they've found is that really, this type of experience is incredible for cognitive development. So when you're looking at students who are learning in a second language, and then they're taking their test in English, that second language is affecting their scores in the English language. Our students are performing higher than even students that are in a regular English Program, and we're also performing higher than students that are in gifted programs and special magnet programs. And that says a lot. That says a lot about our program and our students, our teachers and our families.

What we're looking at here is having a huge community of different cultures, different teachers, different countries, different accents. That's all coming into play in the classroom. Having that kind of environment helps students to be more open minded towards others who might have different practices, different beliefs.

The students are more open to a new culture, a new language, at a very young age. So their proficiency level and also their pronunciation can be more accurate than the students who learn it later in their life, so they have more chances to have more job opportunities. For example, my student wants to go to China to be an English teacher in the future.
